2005 Kimm Production Sale Results

The 2005 Kimm Production Sale, like last year’s sale, continued to be a record setting event. The sale gross total and ewe lamb average established new sale benchmarks. The Kimm Family’s seventeenth annual sale was held on the evening of May 7th at the home farm near Dysart, Iowa. Once again Marty Couch of Cairo, MO sold the offering in a very rapid fire and efficient manner. A large crowd began arriving in mid afternoon to view and evaluate the sheep and later enjoy a complimentary lamb brat supper. After a few comments and introductions by Bob, Marty sold the 165 head for an average of $736, one dollar higher than last year’s successful sale! The Kimm Family and Bar-Zel Suffolks, the partnership flock from Brookings, South Dakota, sold all but 16 head, which were consigned by guest consignors Bubba Chapman, Monticello, Iowa and Rich Rourke, Iowa City, Iowa. Buyers from a record 23 states were issued 128 buyer numbers. Many of these buyers were not present, but made selections based on the data and photos made available on the highly informative Kimm web site.

The majority of a very consistent and uniform set of Suffolks were sired by McLaughlin/Griffen 0038 and his grandson Kimm 02022. Five other home bred rams of similar breeding and an outcross ram, Slack 34, sired the balance of the sheep sold. Although the structural correctness of the sheep attract buyers to the sale, there are other elements in the Kimm program that make this flock’s motto of “Home of Balanced Genetics” a selling point. For example 91 head had loin eyes in excess of 3 square inches and 91% of the sheep sold were RR for scrapie resistance. All sheep were free of the “spider” gene.

A deep and functional group of 63 ram lambs sold for an average of $928. The uniformity of the ram lambs is further evidenced by the fact that this strong average was achieved with no lamb selling for more than $3,000. The top lambs sold to Phil Slay, AL, Daryl Thomas Suffolks, SD, Buckeye Acres, OH, Virginia Tech University, VA, Blane Cooper, MS, and Ron Deppermann, IN. The 10 yearling rams averaged a robust $1010 with high sellers going to Wyscover Sheep Company, CO, Larry Stroebel, WI, and DeZeeuw Suffolks, SD.

The female portion of the sale was likewise, very impressive. Ewe lambs established a new high for the Kimm sale, averaging $642. The top sellers from this 60 head consignment included lambs going to William McCauley, PA, Michael Bott, IA, Daniels Family, IA, Dale Dobberpuhl, WI, and Kelly Maxfield, UT. The 16 yearling ewes were the bargain of the sale as they averaged $612. The top ewes sold to Ron Alves, CA, Kelly Maxfield, UT, and Randall Wilkins, IA. Volume Buyers were Dale Dobberpuhl, WI and Jeff Ulrich, IA.

The Kimm flock of 185 ewes has been enrolled in the National Sheep Improvement program (NSIP) since 1983. Extensive NSIP is available on each animal in the flock. In the fall of 2001 the Kimms entered the Voluntary Scrapie Certification Program. In addition the flock is involved with an on going Johnes research project with the USDA. This research is aimed at establishing a reliable live test for Johnes in sheep. This flock also leads the nation in total number of Suffolk registrations. All lambs are scanned prior to the sale for REA (rib eye area) and back fat to provide prospective customers with one more tool on which to evaluate each animal.

Rob and Christy Zelinski (Bar-Zel Suffolks) have sold the partnership/coop flock in its entirety to Bob. Forty of these ewes will be housed in Monticello, Iowa under the supervision of one of Bob’s former students, Bubba Chapman, who is currently beef and sheep specialist at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The remainder of the Bar-Zel flock will be integrated into Bob’s flock in Dysart, Iowa. Mark your calendars early as the 2006 production sale will be held Saturday, May 6th at the farm.
