Production Sale Results

Bob Kimm and family welcomed a full house from throughout the United States at their Fifteenth Annual Production Sale on Saturday evening, May 3rd at their home farm near Dysart, Iowa.  Marty Couch, Cairo, Missouri served as auctioneer.  A complimentary lamb brat supper was served prior to the start of the 6:30 PM sale, held in the Kimm’s new sale facility.  Guest consignors included Terry Chapman, Monticello, Iowa; Bryce Galloway, Benjamin, Utah; Rich Rourke, Iowa City, Iowa; and Rob and Christy Zelinsky, Parkersburg, Iowa. Over 100 buyer numbers, from 17 states and Mexico, were represented.

Thirty-eight registered Suffolk ram lambs were very well received, bringing an average of $957 and establishing a new record high average from previous Kimm sales.  The top five ram lambs sold respectively to the Unicorn Research Foundation, CA, Renn-Vue Farms, MI, Cover Suffolks, CA, Justin Veil, IL, and Jeff Ulrich, IA.  Kimm 02022 was the sire of nine of the top twelve ram lambs sold, with the other three sired by McLaughlin 02-67, purchased last year from Colorado.  Ninety percent of the rams sold in this year’s sale carried RR at Codon 171 and all were NN.  Guest consignor Bryce Galloway (a young breeder from Utah who bought the Kimms’ entire Hampshire flock in 2002) sold a Hamp ram lamb for $500 to CA.

Six registered Suffolk yearling rams averaged $725 with the top ram going to Jerry Johnson, NE, followed by the reserve yearling to Tucannon River Suffolks, WA.  One mature ram sold for $500 to MN.

Forty-seven registered ewe lambs also sold in record-breaking fashion compared to previous Kimm production sales held.  Every female offered was sold, with the ewe lambs averaging $438, up over $100 from last year.  The top ewe lambs sold respectively to the Gary Ruby family, MD, Willard and Kelly McLaughlin, CO, Cover Suffolks, CA, Kacymarczyk Beef Farm, MI, and Mint Gold Ranch, WI.  The sixteen ewe lambs from guest consignors averaged $264.

Three registered yearling Suffolk ewes averaged $508 with the top females going to RE Gibbs, IA, and Triple “E” Club Lambs, MI.  Two registered Hampshires averaged $338 and three Suff x Hamp yearling ewes averaged $283.

Thirteen aged Suffolk ewes representing some of the older stud ewes in the Kimm program were offered with strong interest.  They averaged  $440, with the top three ewes going respectively to Burke Suffolks, MO, Mint Gold Ranch, WI and Rick Andresen, IA.

The Kimm program has now sold all their crossbred Suff-Hamps and registered Hampshires and will only be offering registered Suffolks in the future. The flock has always emphasized sheep with strong maternal and production traits. They have been enrolled in the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP) since 1983, and enrolled in the Voluntary Scrapie Certification Program, Fall of 2001. Since 1998, the sale offering has had scan data for REA and fat available. “The Home of Balance Genetics” has been their slogan and they are proud to be the source of complete Suffolks for those looking to add structural correctness, performance, breed type, maternal traits and muscle into their breeding programs as well. Bob still has a selection of later born ram lambs for sale at the farm. Their 2004 production sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 1.
