2008 Kimm Production Sale Results

The Twentieth annual Kimm Family Suffolk Production Sale was held Saturday evening, May 3 at their home farm near Dysart, IA. In attendance were families from fourteen states representing just over 100 buyer numbers. Plus an additional 22 buyers, including four additional states, were registered bidders for the live web cast under the direction of EDJE Inc. This was a first for the Kimm Production Sale, resulting in 13 lots selling via of the Internet. Because of this service there were 42 families who also registered just to view the sale, representing 23 different states. Marty Couch of Cairo, MO once again served as auctioneer. Prior to the sale the Kimm’s offered a complimentary lamb brat barbeque with all the trimmings. On the menu again this year was self sever ice cream, a big hit with the youth, even though the weather was a bit on the cool side.

The newest addition to this year’s sale was the offering of $ 1,500 sale credit to juniors in attendance, based on those juniors success taking a quiz (20 different questions for both the junior and senior divisions) administered one hour prior to the sale. Questions were based on the participant’s knowledge of sheep production and the Kimm program. Senior Division winners (age 14-21yrs of age): John Baglien, OR $ 500 sale credit and David Baglien, OR $ 250 sale credit. Junior Division winners (13 yrs and younger): Mark Baglien, OR $ 500 sale credit and Kolton Werner, IA $ 250 sale credit. There were 27 youth participating in the pre-sale quiz. Based on its success, Bob will be doubling the awards for the 2009 Kimm Production Sale. This means that $ 3,000 sale credit will be awarded to six youth (the top three in each age group) at the 2009 sale scheduled for May 2 at the home farm, Dysart, IA. One new stipulation will be that no youth can win the same award more than once, allowing more youth the opportunity to secure these sale discounts. An additional $ 800 of sale credit was awarded to the following youth for their success showing females purchased in the 2007 Kimm Sale: John Baglien, OR, Brian Bagge, IA, Kayte Werner, IA, Kolton Werner, IA, Caleb Wilken, IA, Clay Wilken, IA and Regan Zelinsky, SD. Bob believes that youth are the future and need to be encouraged in every way possible.

Prior to the sale, those in attendance viewed the sale offering plus were allowed to inspect the sires of the 2008 crop, some of the mature ewes based at Dysart, all the 2007 yearling ewes, the 2008 replacement females and a small number of alternate sale rams, which were offered for sale by private treaty. The sale entries offered prospective buyers extensive pedigree information, NSIP data, production records, along with rib eye and back fat data via of ultrasound technology. The above information plus the Kimm’s informative web site allows breeders to select individuals not only on the basis of phenotypic evaluation but also broad production and genetic criteria. The majority of the sheep offered were RR genotype. A total of 146 head (including 10 alternate rams) were sold by the Kimm family averaging $ 578 per head. Guest consignor Rich Rourke, Iowa City, IA, provided an additional ten ewe lambs, all carrying Kimm pedigrees. Bob plans on acquiring the Rourke flock, approximately 60 ewes, in the summer of 2008, which will bring the ewe base for the Kimm program to well over 200 head of females. This flock will be handled separately with its own scrapie status. Bubba Chapman is the supervisor of Bob’s satellite flock located near Tipton, Iowa, which now consist of approximately 80 mature ewes. Both Chapman and Rourke are past students of Bobs and currently are on the Ag faculty at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, IA.

A stud ram led off the sale, Kimm 6022, going to MO at $ 1,600, followed by the high selling ram of the sale, a yearling fetching $ 2,700 to an IA buyer. The 7 yearling rams averaged $ 1,043. A strong set of 62 rams lambs averaged $ 684 with ten lambs topping the $ 1,000 mark. The lead off ram lamb in this year’s sale brought $2,000 picked up by a MN buyer and the high selling ram lamb stayed in IA at $ 2,100.

The female portion of the sale was again very steady. This was the eighth consecutive year in which every female offered by the Kimm program SOLD. The seventy ewe lambs offered by Kimm’s were the largest number ever sold in any previous production sale, averaging $ 432. The top four ewe lambs brought between $ 750-850, three staying in IA and one going to WI. Six yearling ewes averaged $ 483, five going to Iowa families and one to NE. Nine guest consignor ewe lambs averaged $ 275.

Sale Details
The Kimm's take a NO NON-SENSE approach in merchandising their flock

New - $1,500 of sale credit will be awarded to juniors, to be used the night of the sale (check out details on Junior Program Page)
All sheep tested for & carry the resistant Gene at Codon 171 Location & Negative at 136
All lambs sold have REA, BF and Growth Data Available
Entire Flock has been Tested Clean for the Spider Gene
All purebred sheep are registered and sold with papers
The flock was enrolled into the Voluntary Scrapie Certification Program effective June, 2003
With regard  to "Bio-Security", Kimm Suffolks officially has closed their flock to outside females in order to give their customers greater "piece if mind" concerning health protocol
All sheep are slick shorn so "What you see is what you get". This year lambs will be shown two week before and not washed, to help reduce stress when lambs make the long trip to their new home.
Sale Sheep are presented loose in pens on barley straw and there are no ramps or racks, helping to eliminate the surprise when the newly purchased  animals arrive home.
Every sheep is fed the morning of the sale, which helps to reduce stress and allows the lambs to look natural.
With every 1-2 lambs purchased buyers will receive a 50 lb bag of feed, which allows the lambs a healthier adjustment to their new location.
The day of their sale the entire ewe base and ram battery is on  display for prospective buyers to observe.  They feel you should never buy a ram without seeing its mother.
The day of their sale all prospective buyers will have in hand a sale catalog filled with volumes of information ranging from two generation pedigrees for dam and sire of each lamb to REA & BF scan data, codon  test results, adjusted weaning weights plus much much more.
All sheep offered for sale are started at a reasonable floor bid, and there will be no running of bids.
Any lamb purchased may be left at their farm until June 1st. They stand full risk and expense should anything happen.
Their guarantee is that should you have any problems with stock purchased from their offering, they would like to be the first to know. They have traditionally tried to share in buyer's losses that may be considered their responsibility. Repeat business is built on "standing behind your product".
Every buyer receives a "Kimm Suffolks - Home of Balanced Genetics" baseball cap or t-shirt when they settle up after the sale.
A complementary meal of brats, chips, brownies and soft drinks will be served from 4:30 - 6:00 pm prior to the sale.
Three weeks before the sale they will put a preliminary catalog on line at this web site.
They always welcome visitors prior to the sale to view the offering, however NO SHEEP will be sold before the sale. The lambs will be shorn one week in advance of the sale day.
Approximately two weeks before the sale the entire sale consignment will be pictured on their web site.
They will be glad to work with anyone concerning mail bids and promise to handle them just as if you were there in person.
They will be happy to make deliveries to the Des Moines Sales or to Sedalia, MO, National Suffolk Show and Sale, OH at no cost, pending justifiable numbers are headed East.

Average Prices of Past Sales
